Background Story

A New Beginning.
August 14, 2010 a Saturday in the Pacific Northwest in which temperatures flared into the 90’s.Family and friends gathered together to witness the joining of these two wonderful souls in holy matrimony. As their eyes sparkled and smiles lit their faces they exchanged vows promising to be ever faithful, for better or worse, in sickness in health. To all who witnessed this special occasion the love between Dan and Jessie was undeniable. This day was the beginning of a long life together, a life full of promise, hopes and dreams.

Fast Forward.
May 2011. Dan and Jessie sit nervously in the room of medical clinic waiting to see the doctor. It’s been an odd couple of weeks. In April Dan started a new job and shortly after noticed a large lump on the side of his neck near his collarbone. Over a couple of weeks, the lump got worse and they decided to see the doctor. An infection was assumed, and a round of antibiotics was prescribed but the swelling was unabated. A visit to a ENT specialist also confirmed an infection and a second round of stronger antibiotics was started. Days later, Dan experienced severe chest pain something that resembled a heart-attack requiring a visit to the hospital for a series of a chest x-rays and CT scan. Results of these tests found a 3 inch tumor in his chest (Anterior MediaStienum). Needless to say, their world stopped. It had not occurred to them that the results would find anything life threatening especially not a possibility of cancer!

Rewind.
In 2000, Jessie Lee Davis is a young teenage girl. Like many girls her age she has a lot on her plate, but unlike most, life has thrown her a couple of curve balls. Earlier in the year, she lost her mother to suicide and in August her father, Deputy Wally Davis, was shot and killed in the line of duty. Jessie is devastated – her life begins to unravel and slowly but steadily starts to spin out of control.

Dan, too, has had his fair share of difficulties. As a teenager he begins experimenting with drugs, struggles in school and eventually drops out. His drug addiction lands him in trouble with the law and he faces long-term consequences if he doesn’t seek treatment.

It is among the chaos of these two people’s lives that fate (or God, if you will) stepped in to alter their paths. The year is 2008, they are both working the night shift at the local newspaper. A friendship sparks, but nothing more. Jessie is in recovery and working hard to stay clean and sober. Dan is faltering; falling back into old habits. They go there separate ways, but Dan knows that Jessie is someone special; she is willing to talk with him when noone else will. In a dark moment, having hit bottom, he reaches out to her for her support. She responds. (On February 14, 2009, Dan achieved sobriety).

Fast Forward:
June 2011. After 6 weeks of tests, scans, labs, 4 different invasive biopsy's, extreme pain, an extremely fast progressing illness, loads of sleepless nights, mental instability, depression, buckets of prescriptions, and thousands owed indebt...We now have learned that Dan has tumors along his spine in the lowerback (creates extreme back spasms and excruciating pain), a large and faster growing tumor in his chest (which pushes against his lung and sternum creating extreme chest pain and shortness of breathe), and lymph nodes throughout the body are infected as well, mostly in his neck and chest.

Monday, June 20th was Dan's first Chemo treatment. The road ahead is long, but having the love and support of friends and family will make it more tolerable. Keep us in your prayers.
